Bilbao's Teatro Arriaga will stage Pablo Sorozabal's The Girl with the Bunch of Roses in June.

BILBAO, SPAIN, June 23, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Girl with the Bunch of Roses is set to be performed at Bilbao's Teatro Arriaga Antzokia later this month.

Entitled 'La del Manojo de Rosas' in Spanish, the production originally premiered in 1934.

This is just three years after the country's Second Republic was declared, yet it champions the working classes.

It is a lyrical farce about a florist being wooed by a mechanic and a pilot, but it also features a multitude of fascinating and hilarious characters.

The story was written by Pablo Sorozabal and stage direction comes from Emilio Sagi, the nephew of Emilio Sagi Vela, who played the part of the mechanic in the 1934 production.

In a statement, the venue cited a passage from Sorozabal's autobiography in which he says: "That a Basque educated in music in Germany ... seeks to write a farce in two acts with the action taking place on the same date as the opening night ... that does not enter anyone's head."

While La del Manojo de Rosas may well be his best-loved piece, 1936's La Taberna del Puerto is also still a firm favourite in Spain.

The show runs from June 22nd to 29th, with performances starting at 19:00 or 20:00 local time depending on the night.
