The flooding was a time for celebration as the silt carried by the water was used to fertilize the crops and without the flooding it meant that the people would be without enough food.

Today in places like Cairo and Luxor the event is still very much celebrated even though the river no longer floods due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam in 1970.

From 15th August Egyptians have a two week holiday and festivities over this time generally include various shows and outdoor concerts such as belly dancing and traditional forms of music.
