LateRooms.com - Claude Cahun Photography Exhibition Opens in Paris
The innovative photography of Claude Cahun is on display at the Jeu de Paume this summer.
PARIS, FRANCE, July 02, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A new exhibition devoted to the photography of Claude Cahun has opened in Paris and will be on display until September 25th 2011.
The French artist was born Lucy Renee Mathilde Schwob, but intentionally adopted a sexually ambiguous pseudonym when she began to paint and take pictures.
This theme of sexual and gender ambiguity runs throughout her work, as people who attend this new show at Jeu de Paume will see.
She would take photographs of herself dressed as a man and a woman, exploring and challenging the preconceptions society holds regarding the sexes.
The collection in Paris is the first major ensemble of Cahun's work to appear in France in 16 years.
"Unlike other artists - mainly men - who made portraits but never or very rarely exposed their own person to the lens (Man Ray, Hans Bellmer, Andre Kertesz), Claude Cahun was at once the object and the subject of her artistic experiments," noted the organisers in a statement.
Admission costs EUR8.50 (GBP7.65). The closest Metro station is Concorde.
Photography enthusiasts can use LateRooms.com to browse a vast selection of Paris hotels, including the Hotel Bastille Paris.
